London-based Bangladeshi writer, filmmaker, dancer and singer Ananya Das, is the principal vocalist and sound engineer for ‘Unskin’.
Ananya holds two Masters degrees, and is currently a full time PhD researcher in the field of Sociology at Kingston University. When she is not studying, her passion is music and she is a supremely talented vocalist who has performed as recently as the Bengali New Year celebrations at Rich Mix Centre in Shoreditch. Ananya’s musical talent was nurtured by one year’s worth of training in Hindustani Classical Music (vocals) from Shakhri Begum Memorial Trust, which is a music school spearheaded by the famous maestro Ustad Rashid Khan in Calcutta. Additionally, she has been the sound recordist, designer and editor for her earlier short film projects, which has allowed her to better understand the role of sound in filmmaking.
Alongside her vocal skills, Ananya has learnt Bharatnatyam – an Indian classical dance form – from the age of three and has performed both solo and in groups, for various television programmes, as well as on stage in Dhaka, Calcutta and London.
Today, Ananya aspires to combine her skills into her filmmaking, and from her first short film ‘Pun Intended’ in 2009, to her latest film ‘Mind The Gap’, she sees no limits to combining different art forms, which makes her a valuable asset to the dance film ‘Unskin’ – a project that is not afraid to mix disciplines.
